Principals Report

Teaching and Learning at Clyde in Term 1.

Term 1 has been a productive term and our students are now well settled into their learning spaces. Term 1 has been about building relationships with our students and establishing routines and class expectations.

The focus has been on History this term and our teachers have been integrating this topic into all areas of the curriculum.

Last week our teachers with their Professional Learning Teams participated in a day of structured planning for Term 2.  We have used the Victorian Curriculum to ensure we have sequential plans for teaching and learning in all classes.

The first week of term 2 will see us revisiting Community Classrooms and setting goals in Reading, Writing and Maths for the term.

We will have a focus of Science, both chemical and biological for the remainder of the term.  We are holding a Science night on May, 25th ( our Education Week event) so look out for more information closer to the day.

Curriculum Day – Friday, 21st April

Our staff will be combining with Nar Nar Goon PS for a day with Michael Ymer with a focus on ‘Making Maths meaningful to your students- How would this look in the classroom? This is a student free day.

Parent Question: How can we help our Foundation students to learn how to make friends?

There are many ways we can help our Foundation students to make new friends at school.

At home, you could give your child opportunities to meet children with similar interests through extra-curricular activities or play dates. Sometimes reminders about what to do might help too. For example, you could encourage your child to introduce himself when he/she  meets new children – ‘Hello, I’m Jack. What’s your name?’ Teachers and parents can encourage children to come up with ideas for play at school, as a lot of children struggle to engage with others, as they don’t know what or how to initiate play. Asking other children to share what they play, can help children come up with ideas. For the first 6 months of the year our Foundation students are encouraged to play in a designated area, on the front playground. This is to encourage them to make friendships with children of similar ages and teachers are on duty in this area to keep an eye out for students who may not be playing with others. If you have concerns that your child is not making friendships, please see their class teacher.

Middle PLT News

What a great term we have had in our area. The students have worked extremely hard to achieve their learning goals. Our focus this term has been establishing classroom communities based on Respect, Resilience and Responsibility. In History we have learnt about celebrations and first contact.

In Reading students have continued to develop strategies based on CAFÉ (comprehension, accuracy, fluency and extend vocabulary). The students have been starting each day reading their “ good fit” books in our sustained reading time between 9 am and 9:20 am.  It has also been pleasing to see that students are reading at home. At our recent middle school assembly the following students received their 25 nights of reading award.

3/4D – Ebony K, Hayden H, Ranudi G, Layalla D

3/4C – Macey M, Shaun D, Ershad A, Aaliyah B, Ella R

3/4B – Preethika V, Abbey L, Abbie P,  Chantelle H, Louis R

3/4A – Charlie O

During the term we had our house athletic sports where our students earned points for competing in events such as sprints, distance races, relays, hurdles, long jump, high jump, triple jump, discus and shot put. It was great to see the effort that our students put in on the day. From these sports a team of students went to Casey Fields to compete in the District Athletic Sports.  We are very proud of all the students who represented our school. They spoke at our assembly and here is what they had to say about their day.

Hi I am Holly and I am from 3/4D. As you know some people went to Districts for athletics on the 9th of March. I was one of them. It was at CASEY FIELDS ATHLETICS TRACK. My event was triple jump. It was boiling hot. I felt hot, nervous and I had butterflies in my tummy. I had a fantastic time!

Hi I’m Emily and on the 9th of March I did Districts Athletics. It was at Casey Fields. My event was high jump. I came 4th, and the height of the high jump bar I got up to was 1.10 metres. Even though it was really hot I still had a fantastic day.

Hello my name is Will and I will be talking about District Athletics. On the 9th of March we all went to District Athletics. I was in shot put, discus and relay. I came 4th in everyone except relay. We came 5th in relay. I had a hot and sweaty, and awesome day!

Hi my name is Josh. On the 9th of March I was at Casey Fields for District Athletics. My event was 1500m I came 18th out of 20 people. It was three and a half laps of the Casey fields Athletics oval. After the race I felt sick!

Hi my name is Sema and I will be talking about district. Two weeks ago there was the district sports and I was one of the people who did it. I felt really nervous but I got through it. I competed in the100 metre sprint and the 200 metre sprint. I also did the relay. It was a very hot day but I tried.

I was really nervous about districts because I had never been there before. I competed in high jump and long jump. I didn’t win anything in high jump but I finished second in long jump. Districts was fantastic. I’m really proud that I came second.  Shaun

At the District Athletics, I competed in the event called discus. What you have to do is throw a small disc as far as you can. I came 2nd against some really good athletes; one girl even did Little Athletics. I was happy because I tried my best and it was fun!  Steph.

I was really happy to come third at the District Athletics in the 1500m run. I was running against lots of kids, including Josh H from 34D. After the race, my legs were really sore. It was an amazing day! Abbey L.

As our first term comes to an end, we are busy planning for next term.  Our Inquiry unit will be focusing on chemical and biological science.  Our students will continue to set goals for their learning.

We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to an exciting term two.

Regards

Mrs Chester, Mrs Cecil, Mr Selby, Miss Heitch and Mrs McBride
