What a wonderful sight to see so many mums, grandmas, aunts and sisters at our Mother’s Day Picnic. The children certainly enjoyed the experience and loved having you at school for this special occasion. On behalf of the Clyde PS community, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day.
Thank you to our mums who ran the Mother’s Day stall for our students headed up by Tracey Martin.
A reminder that ‘Education Week’ Maths Fun Night is set for Thursday, 19th May so please mark it on your calendar. Further information about this event will be coming home next week.
Senior Reading Adventure Program
Our Community Partnerships Team are currently working on a survey that will be sent out to parents with a range of questions that will help us identify some ways we can build on connections with our parents and the wider community. Fraser Selby and Sue Lumley are attending a Bastow (Department of Education) course on Monday and Tuesday to network with other schools and find out current well researched ways that schools can work with community. Please keep a look out for this survey via TIQBIZ over the next couple of weeks.

Last Friday morning in drizzly conditions Clyde Primary school competed in the District Cross Country. All of our students tried their best and the school was very proud of their achievements.
Congratulations to the following students (pictured) who were successful in moving through to the next phase. These students finished in the top 10 placings in their age groups.
Lachlan, Ricky, Bailey, Brodie, Levi, Courtney, Jordyn and Porsha.
The students in the Year 3/4 classrooms have made a terrific start to term 2. The Year 3 students have been working diligently to prepare for their first experience of NAPLAN by covering a range of Reading, Writing and Numeracy topics as well as Language Conventions. The Year 4 students have also been working exceptionally hard in order to achieve their learning goals in these areas.
Earlier this term Mrs Chester and Mr Graham attended the MAV Mathematics Conference. The ideas and resources shared at this conference have already been implemented within the Year 3/4 classrooms. Students have been engaged with a variety of hands on and open ended tasks to assist with their learning of Measurement, Geometry and Probability. We have also been using the website Kahoot.it as a fun way to remember the different units of measurement and the names of different 3D objects.
Throughout this term, students have been exploring the ways that Australians are connected to other regional and global communities. They have been learning about how key events, such as the Olympics, have contributed to the development of Australia as well as other nations involved in the Olympic Games.
To enrich our term 2 inquiry unit, we have planned an excursion to the MCG. Students will get the opportunity to visit the National Sports Museum to learn about the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, the 2000 Sydney Olympic as well as other significant sporting achievements. Students will also get the chance to tour the facilities of the MCG including the interactive ‘Game On’ exhibit. More information about this excursion will be released closer to the date.
We are also very excited that it is a school production year at Clyde. This year our production is called “The Eternal Alchemist”. In preparation for the school production we are beginning to make our students costumes. We require students to bring in some clothing items to create these amazing costumes to make our night as incredible as possible. The requirements are as follows:
All Year 3 students:
Black or grey top and pants.
Year 4 students in Mr Graham’s class:
Boys require: Army/camo coloured top and long pants
Girls require: Ballerina type dress.
Year 4 students in Mrs Cecil’s classes:
Boys require: Army/camo coloured top and long pants
Girls require: Blue Dress
Year 4 students in Mrs Chester’s class:
Boys require: Red T-shirt and black long pants
Girls require: White T-shirt and white leggings.
Please ensure all your items are sent in together, not separately. We would appreciate if you could bring your students clothing in ASAP, however, they are due by Friday 10th June.

The Year 3/4 Middle PLT
What is NAPLAN?
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials.
Why do students do NAPLAN tests?
NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working and what areas need to be prioritised for improvement. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process; they do not replace the extensive ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance.
What will be tested and how?
NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. From 2016, NAPLAN content will be aligned with the Australian Curriculum. For more information on this please see the NAP website: www.nap.edu.au. Questions are multiple-choice or require a short written response. The writing task requires students to write a text in response to a prompt. To give you an idea of what the tests look like, sample questions and a sample writing task are available on the NAP website: www.nap.edu.au
Who will run the tests?
NAPLAN tests are conducted at schools and administered by classroom teachers, school deputies or principals. Each state and territory is responsible for marking the tests in accordance with strict guidelines and processes.
How can I help my child prepare for the tests?
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students have already been learning through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. If you have any questions about your child’s preparation for NAPLAN, you should make a time to speak with their teacher. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. The use of services by coaching providers is not recommended.
What additional support can schools provide for students with special needs?
All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN tests. Students with disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided in the classroom. Students who have a temporary injury may also be reasonably accommodated. A formal exemption may be granted for a student with significant intellectual disability and/or significant coexisting conditions, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background. Your school principal and your state testing authority can give you more information on special provisions or the process required to gain a formal exemption.
Walk For Westernport
In cold, wet and windy conditions at Hastings on Sunday, two of our Student Ambassadors, myself and our family members braved the weather and helped support the Dolphin Research Institute’s ‘Walk for Western Port.’
The walk was to raise environmental awareness and support the Dolphin Research Institute of which our school is involved in through the educational program ‘i sea i care.’
Congratulations Arwen, Lily and Christine for braving the longer walk of 7km and also to Jaykob and his many family members for walking to support our bays’ dolphins and environment.
Clyde Primary School families can still support the I Sea I Care’ Ambassadors raise funds for the Dolphin Research Institute by sending a gold coin donation to their classroom to be collected by the school’s ‘i sea i care’ Student Ambassadors.
Online sponsorship for the ‘Clyde Walkers’ supporting the Dolphin Research Institute’s research and educational programs will be available up until May 16th
